Malawi plans to connect 2,000 primary and secondary schools to the internet under the Digital Malawi Acceleration Project, a World Bank-supported programme. Education, Science and Technology Minister Bright Msaka announced this on Thursday in Lilongwe at the opening of the 19th UbuntuNet-Connect Conference, Malawi Voice reports.
The Malawi Research and Education Network, the national network linking educational institutions and research institutions, is to play a central role in implementing the project. Its director-general, Solomon Dindi, said reliable digital infrastructure would facilitate pupils' and researchers' access to knowledge, international collaboration and scientific innovation.
The project extends Malawi's efforts to make research an economic driver. On 1 October, Minister Bright Msaka notably called for the development of health research, while universities were urged on 29 September to attract more foreign students.
