South African police are investigating taxi-related shootings that killed three drivers and injured four others in Khayelitsha and Philippi East, in the Western Cape, on Wednesday. The victims were shot in separate attacks, amid growing tensions in the sector, according to SABC News and provincial police spokesperson Andre Traut.

Police arrested a man in Khayelitsha on Thursday on suspicion of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. A 9mm pistol and 15 rounds were found under a vehicle near a group of drivers gathered in the Site C area, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS). No suspect had been arrested for the shootings when police issued their update, and officers had increased deployments at taxi ranks to protect passengers.

The new shootings come after four people were killed in taxi-related shootings in Cape Town, reported on 24 October. Police had already been deployed in response to violence between taxi operators in the city.
