A Kenyan national employed by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families was arrested in Seattle on Monday for an alleged visa overstay, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), cited by Fox News. He was stopped during a traffic check while wearing his employer’s jacket and carrying an identification card issued by the state administration.
The man entered the United States on a B-2 tourist visa and is alleged to have remained there after his authorisation expired. The Washington department confirmed that it had employed him since 16 August 2024 and that, when he was hired, he had provided documents indicating that he was authorised to work, said Nancy Gutierrez, the administration’s communications director. The US Department of Homeland Security points out that work authorisation does not guarantee the right to remain in the United States and does not necessarily prevent detention or deportation proceedings.
