Donald Trump has signed a proclamation to regulate US imports of robots, industrial machinery and their components in the name of national security, according to the White House. The text instructs the Secretary of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to negotiate agreements with partner countries on these imports.
The Secretary of Commerce will have to inform the president of any situation that could justify further measures under Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act. Donald Trump reserves the possibility of taking further action to adjust imports. The White House says the United States consumes more robots and industrial equipment than it produces and depends on imports for most of these products, despite the recent increase in investment in its factories.
