Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 season as a Manchester United player has been voted the best campaign in Ballon d’Or history in a public poll. Lionel Messi’s 2012 season came second, ahead of Ronaldo’s 2017 season, according to results published after the vote held for the trophy’s 70th anniversary.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2007-08 season at Manchester United has been voted the best campaign in the history of the Ballon d’Or, according to the result of a public vote organised for the trophy’s 70th anniversary and announced on Wednesday. The poll, open from 1 October until 11.59pm on 27 October, Paris time, invited supporters to choose their favourite season from among the campaigns of winners.

Lionel Messi’s 2012 season came second, ahead of Ronaldo’s 2017 season. Messi’s 2023 season and Ronaldo’s 2016 season completed the top five, according to the results shared by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on X.

With Manchester United in 2007-08, Ronaldo scored 42 goals in all competitions, including 31 in the Premier League and seven in the Champions League. The club won both competitions, and the Portuguese player scored in the Champions League final against Chelsea. His league total also earned him the European Golden Shoe, before his first Ballon d’Or that year.

Ronaldo went on to win the trophy four more times, in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, taking his total to five. Messi’s seasons in 2015, 2011, 2009, 2019 and 2021 are also included in the ranking.
