A Serbian policeman killed an attacker armed with two knives outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade after being wounded in the face. The government raised the threat level to its highest setting and strengthened police presence at sensitive sites, according to Daily Maverick, citing Serbian authorities.

A Serbian policeman shot dead an attacker armed with two knives outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, according to Serbia's Interior Minister, Ivica Dacic. The unidentified man wounded the policeman in the face with a knife before the officer fired several times. The Belgrade Higher Prosecutor's Office ruled that the use of the weapon was justified and amounted to self-defence.

Dacic raised Serbia's security alert level to the maximum and announced an increased police presence at key sites. The prosecutor's office said the investigation was continuing. It was the second attack targeting the Israeli embassy in Belgrade in two years: in June 2024, an attacker wounded a Serbian policeman in the neck with a crossbow.

The attack came the day after Israel's election, where projected results put the opposition bloc neck and neck with the camp of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reports Daily Maverick. In Serbia, the student movement toppled long-time leader Aleksandar Vucic in an election on Sunday, but the outgoing administration remains in office in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed.
