Tanzania has called for predictable and easily accessible funding to implement biodiversity protection programmes, particularly in developing countries. Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office responsible for the Union and Environment, Hamadi Yussuf Masauni, made the appeal on Tuesday at COP17 of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan, Armenia.
The Tanzanian delegation also called for stronger institutional capacity, access to appropriate technologies, biodiversity data and the technical resources needed to monitor national commitments. It called for public policy reforms and incentive mechanisms to take food security, farmers’ livelihoods and people’s priorities into account.
Tanzania wants implementation of its 2025-2030 national biodiversity strategy and action plan to be aligned with its environmental conservation transformation programme and the objectives of its National Development Vision towards 2050. It also stressed the protection of water sources and better coordination between biodiversity, combating climate change and combating desertification, according to Jamhuri Media.
The appeal comes after Tanzania’s call on 25 October for stronger protection of Lake Tanganyika, another environmental priority for the country. Tanzania calls for better protection of Lake Tanganyika.
