Morocco voted against a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution calling for the lifting of the US embargo on Cuba, adopted with 130 votes. The decision confirms Rabat’s alignment with Washington, after it abstained in a similar vote in September 2025, according to Yabiladi.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted a non-binding resolution on 28 October calling for the lifting of the US embargo on Cuba, with 130 votes in favour and 17 against. Morocco voted against, Yabiladi reports, alongside the United States, Israel and Argentina, among others.
Twenty-five countries abstained, including Poland, Portugal and Qatar. The text received 35 fewer votes in favour than in September 2025, when 165 states supported a similar resolution, according to Yabiladi.
The vote extends Morocco’s shift in position since Donald Trump returned to the US presidency in January 2025. The kingdom abstained in September 2025, then voted against, on 30 June 2026, a proposal to fund $116 million in World Food Programme assistance to Cuba for 2026-2030. Rabat restored diplomatic relations with Havana in April 2017, after 38 years of severed ties.
The vote comes amid Morocco’s recent positions on the Sahara. On 28 October, the UN made Moroccan autonomy the sole basis for negotiations in the Sahara, in a resolution on settling the conflict.
