Tanzania’s vocational education and training authority has partnered with Tanzania Breweries to train 300 young people to use and maintain agricultural machinery. The three-year scholarship programme will take in 100 beneficiaries a year at five centres, reports the Daily News.
Tanzania will train 300 young people to use and maintain agricultural machinery under a three-year scholarship programme run by the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) and Tanzania Breweries Plc (TBL). The agreement was signed on Wednesday 28 October in Dar es Salaam by VETA director general Anthony Kasore and TBL managing director Michelle Kilpin, according to Tanzania’s Daily News.
One hundred young people will be trained each year at five VETA institutions: the Kihonda and Manyara regional vocational training and service centres, as well as the vocational training centres in Mpanda, Arusha and Dakawa. The Ujuzi Kwanza programme is to provide beneficiaries with skills that can be used in paid employment or agricultural entrepreneurship, according to Anthony Kasore.
VETA and TBL place the partnership within Tanzania’s Development Vision to 2050, which makes agriculture one of the country’s nine priority sectors. Michelle Kilpin said TBL already supported smallholder sorghum, maize and barley farmers through training, technical advice and technologies intended to increase yields.
