The defence challenged the consistency of a witness’s evidence in the South African trial of Ralph Stanfield, his wife Nicole Johnson and 12 co-accused. It compared his initial statement, testimony and a video concerning weapons seen at the Palm Springs complex, according to proceedings at the Western Cape High Court.
The defence challenged the credibility of the third witness in Ralph Stanfield’s trial before the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday 28 October, citing discrepancies between his initial statement, testimony and a video linked to an incident at the Palm Springs complex, IOL reports. Lawyer Johannes “Bal” Abrahams specifically questioned the witness’s account of firearms being present when the accused entered the complex.
The witness said he saw the firearms as one accused crouched to pass under the access barrier. The defence argues that the footage contradicts this version, while the video shown in court contains no sound, according to IOL.
The exchanges also concerned the complex’s incident register. The witness maintained that an entry concerning the events of 24 November 2022 appeared there or could be found, whereas the security manager had previously said that no entry related to the event. He also maintained that he heard police officers describe someone as “untouchable”, a remark absent from his first statement.
The trial concerns Ralph Stanfield, his wife Nicole Johnson and 12 co-accused. The prosecution is pursuing charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery and weapons offences, alleging links to the criminal gang The Firm, IOL reports.
