Liberian lawyer Elijah M. Sayeh distributed notebooks, pens and pencils to more than 4,000 pupils at over 30 schools in Nimba County, Liberia, Front Page Africa reports.
The distribution, organised during the week of his birthday on 28 October, is part of an initiative to support rural education. Mr Sayeh explained that his own difficulties obtaining school materials when he was a pupil in Buutuo, Nimba County, had prompted him to help children facing similar obstacles.
School officials and parents welcomed the initiative and called for further assistance with school supplies. Osaka Teah, head of Glaalay Public School, said the community regularly turned to Mr Sayeh when it faced challenges in education, Front Page Africa reports.
At the distribution, organisers Samuel Youdee and Michael Menwon also announced the third edition of the Atty. Sayeh quiz competition, scheduled for the current school year.
