The executive director of the Liberian Environmental Protection Agency, Emmanuel King Urey Yarkpawolo, has agreed to advocate to donors for increased contributions to the Global Environment Facility (GEF). He made this commitment during a meeting with Diego Mesa Puyo, the GEF’s new director-general and chairperson, on Thursday in Yerevan, Armenia, Front Page Africa reported.
The mission is intended to encourage donors and development partners to increase funding for projects devoted to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and environmental protection in developing countries. It strengthens Liberia’s participation in international discussions on environmental financing, according to the newspaper.
Liberia is home to a significant part of the Upper Guinean rainforest and regularly calls for international financial support to protect its forests, natural habitats and other resources while pursuing its economic development. Yarkpawolo’s commitment comes during the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, devoted in particular to mobilising resources for vulnerable countries.
