Sierra Leonean police held an awareness session on Tuesday 27 October for pupils in Rutile about drug use, violence, child abuse and early marriages. The meeting was led by Ahmed Tejan Salif, commander of the local unit of the Rutile division, according to Sierra Loaded.
Salif asked the pupils to report their problems through the appropriate channels and resolve their disputes without resorting to violence. Augustine Nallo, from the Family Support Unit, outlined the penalties for child abuse and sexual harassment. The operations officer, Mohamed F. Mattia, explained the dangers of drug use.
The school’s principal, Ibrahim Koroma, welcomed the initiative and called for these awareness programmes to be repeated. A question-and-answer session allowed the pupils to ask the police officers about their safety and risky behaviour.
