More than 130 participants and representatives of civil society, authorities and partners met in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, to discuss rural women’s land rights and livelihoods. Asa David Chon, ForumCiv Liberia’s country manager, called for concrete measures on access to land, financing and the agricultural economy at the three-day forum, reports FrontPage Africa.

A forum held in Buchanan has called on the Liberian government, financial institutions and agricultural investors to take concrete measures to strengthen rural women’s land rights, reports FrontPage Africa. Asa David Chon, ForumCiv Liberia’s country manager, urged participants to move beyond repeated commitments to women’s empowerment.

The meeting brought together grassroots women and civil society representatives from eight counties, including Rivercess, Nimba, Grand Cape Mount and Gbarpolu. The participants shared their experiences of land disputes, difficulties with agricultural production, a lack of economic opportunities and traditional practices that undermine women’s rights.

The forum comes amid a context in which rural women in Liberia gain access to obstetric care late, a subject already covered in an article published on 14 October on late access to obstetric care.
