Algeria’s dossier on five ancient royal mausoleums has been selected for preliminary evaluation by Unesco World Heritage advisory bodies. Of 60 applications submitted, 35 passed this stage, according to Algeria’s Ministry of Culture and Arts.
The application for five royal mausoleums of ancient Algeria has entered preliminary evaluation for possible inscription on Unesco’s World Heritage List, the Algerian Ministry of Culture and Arts announced in a statement relayed by the Algerian Press Service (APS). The Unesco World Heritage Centre confirmed that the dossier meets the technical requirements set out in the 1972 World Heritage Convention.
The monuments concerned are the Royal Mausoleum of Imedghassen, in Batna wilaya, the Royal Mausoleum of Massinissa, in El Khroub, Constantine wilaya, and the Royal Mausoleum of Siga, in Aïn Témouchent wilaya. The application also includes the Abalessa-Tin Hinan funerary monument, in the Hoggar, in Tamanrasset, as well as the Djeddars of Frenda, in Tiaret wilaya.
Of the 60 applications submitted, 35 were selected and forwarded to the competent advisory bodies for further evaluation, according to the Ministry of Culture and Arts. Entry into this phase does not amount to definitive inscription on the World Heritage List, which will depend on the outcome of the examination process.
The five monuments cover a period from the 4th century BC to the 6th century AD. Their application seeks to have their historical and architectural value recognised internationally and to strengthen their preservation.
