Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty wants to accelerate energy projects with Libya: gas connections, refining Libyan crude in Egypt and electricity interconnection. During a meeting in Tripoli with Libya's acting oil minister, Khalifa Abdulsadek, he called for cooperation on petroleum products, according to a statement from Egypt's foreign ministry.
Egypt wants to accelerate its energy projects with Libya, including gas pipeline connections, refining Libyan oil on its soil and an electricity interconnection, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Saturday evening. The statement was published by the ministry after a meeting in Tripoli with Libya's acting Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdulsadek, according to SABC News.
Cairo is seeking to ease the energy constraint imposed by insufficient domestic gas production, aggravated by rising global liquefied natural gas prices since the start of the war waged by the United States and Israel against Iran. Abdelatty also called for cooperation on petroleum products and for the completion of projects to refine Libyan crude in Egypt for re-export. Khalifa Abdulsadek, for his part, said Libya would continue implementing existing projects and would soon travel to Cairo to continue technical discussions with the Egyptian ministers of petroleum and electricity.
The meeting came the day after the reopening of Egypt's embassy in Tripoli, on 7 November, after 12 years of closure. It also follows Libya's efforts to upgrade its electricity network, with an emergency plan for its electricity network announced on 18 October.
