The CEN-SAD Executive Council, meeting on Saturday in Tripoli, approved the return of the organisation's executive secretariat to the Libyan capital. The final decision rests with heads of state, expected in N'Djamena in early 2027, according to the Libyan agency LANA.

The Executive Council of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) approved on Saturday in Tripoli the principle of the return of the organisation's executive secretariat to the Libyan capital, its original headquarters, according to the official Libyan news agency LANA.

The decision must still be validated by heads of state at the next CEN-SAD summit, announced for N'Djamena in early 2027. The executive secretariat has been based in the Chadian capital since the transfer that took place after 2011, in the context of Libyan instability. No date for the effective transfer was announced at the end of the meeting.

Libya's acting Foreign Minister Taher Al-Baour said discussions between member states had produced a consensus on the return of the secretariat to Tripoli and on relaunching the organisation's institutions, and thanked Chad for hosting and operating these institutions in recent years. Chad's foreign minister, Ahmad Kogri, welcomed the agreement reached among members of the Executive Council. Libyan Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah, who opened the work of this 22nd ordinary session, had called for a timetable to be set to complete the transfer.

Founded in February 1998 in Tripoli, CEN-SAD aims to promote political, economic and security cooperation among its member states.
