Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the US Embassy in Libya discussed the difficulties faced by citizens of both countries in their visa applications. The meeting was held in Tripoli, according to Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, quoted by Libya Herald.

The Libyan delegation was led by Alaa al-Din El-Hashimi Ben Rajab, director of the Americas Department. Janet Robert, head of consular affairs at the US embassy, took part after recently taking up her post. The two sides discussed ways to facilitate procedures while respecting the laws and legal requirements of their respective countries.

The participants also agreed to continue consultations and coordination between the services concerned, as part of consular cooperation between Libya and the United States.

The meeting was part of a series of contacts between Washington and Libyan actors. On 4 October, Washington had pushed Tripoli and Benghazi towards a political and security agreement, while on 17 October discussions focused on energy investment in Libya with ExxonMobil, the US oil company, and Washington. These exchanges concerned matters separate from the consular procedures discussed in Tripoli.
