Algeria’s Defence Ministry has launched the second phase of decontamination at the site of the French Béryl E2 nuclear test in In Ekker, in the Tamanrasset region, to treat radioactive waste using national resources, according to TSA, Echorouk and Observ'Algérie. Algiers accuses France of refusing to hand over records and maps locating buried waste, complicating the rehabilitation of In Ekker and Reggane.
The operation on 1 November 2026 took place in the 6th Military Region and coincided with the commemoration of the 72nd anniversary of the start of the National Liberation War on 1 November 1954, Observ'Algérie reports. It is a new stage following an initial partial decontamination operation announced at In Ekker in February 2026.
France conducted 17 nuclear tests in the Algerian Sahara between 1960 and 1967, including four atmospheric explosions at Reggane and 13 underground tests at In Ekker, according to Observ'Algérie. Algeria’s operations include marking off contaminated areas, collecting waste and confining it in concrete containers.
