The UN Security Council did not renew the mandate of MINURSO, the UN mission in the Sahara, thereby bringing it to an end. The decision comes as the Council reaffirms its commitment to a political solution, reports TelQuel.

The UN Security Council has ended the mandate of MINURSO, the United Nations mission in the Sahara, bringing its operations to a halt and launching its liquidation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has taken note of the termination and called on the parties to cooperate in dismantling the mission and to continue dialogue, according to TelQuel.

The decision follows the Security Council’s failure to extend MINURSO’s mandate. The mission’s remit included monitoring the ceasefire and organising a referendum in the Sahara.

It follows the UN vote on the future of MINURSO on 30 October, and then the halt to the mission’s operations and launch of its liquidation, announced on 1 November.
