Bahraini civil society actor Jamal Ahmed Yaqoub Kamal says the UN Security Council vote confirms support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara. He cited in particular the 11 votes in favour of the US draft resolution and welcomed Bahrain’s favourable vote, in a statement to MAP.

Bahraini civil society actor Jamal Ahmed Yaqoub Kamal presents Morocco’s autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole international reference for resolving the conflict over the Sahara. He was speaking after 11 UN Security Council members, including Bahrain, supported the draft US resolution, according to a statement to MAP.

Jamal Ahmed Yaqoub Kamal believes the vote requires an approach that takes into account the transformations in Morocco’s southern provinces and the investments made there. He considers the autonomy plan to already be a development project, beyond its political dimension, and welcomed Bahrain’s position in favour of Moroccan sovereignty and the kingdom’s territorial integrity.

The position comes after the Security Council’s 30 October vote, presented by Mohamed El Ghali as support for the autonomy plan. It follows statements by Heydt on the 11 votes in favour of the US draft, published on 31 October.
