Diogo Pacheco de Amorim, vice-president of Portugal’s Assembly of the Republic, says that not extending MINURSO’s mandate is a positive step towards ending the Sahara conflict. Morocco’s MAP news agency reported the statement as favourable to Rabat.

Diogo Pacheco de Amorim, vice-president of Portugal’s Assembly of the Republic, called the non-renewal of MINURSO’s mandate, the UN mission in the Sahara, a “positive step” towards ending a conflict that has lasted for several decades, according to Morocco’s MAP news agency.

The position comes after MINURSO’s mandate ended in the Sahara, announced on 30 October, and as Morocco plans the mission’s imminent withdrawal from the Sahara, according to Rabat, on 31 October.
