Portuguese MP Paulo Neves said the eleven votes supporting the US draft at the UN Security Council showed growing support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative in the Sahara. He noted that the draft was not adopted and called the development politically significant, according to MAP.
The UN Security Council vote on the Sahara shows growing support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, Portuguese Social Democratic Party (PSD) MP Paulo Neves told MAP. Eleven Council members voted in favour of the draft resolution, but it was not adopted.
Paulo Neves described the support expressed by the eleven votes as an important international consensus and said Moroccan autonomy was gradually emerging as the framework for resolving the Sahara conflict. The Portuguese MP also welcomed the development of Morocco’s southern provinces, citing Dakhla, as well as their representation in the Moroccan Parliament, according to MAP.
The vote follows the UN decision to make Moroccan autonomy the sole basis for negotiations on the Sahara, announced on 28 October. It comes after statements by German parliamentarian Heydt on the eleven votes in favour of the US draft, published on 31 October.
