Niane says Macky Sall’s return could be seen as aggressive

Abdoulaye Niane, general delegate of the DER/FJ, believes that Macky Sall’s return to Senegalese politics could be seen as a “declaration of aggression”. He nevertheless considers it unlikely that the former president could bring down Bassirou Diomaye Faye, according to Seneweb, cited by Senego.

Abdoulaye Niane, general delegate of the Delegation for Rapid Entrepreneurship for Women and Young People (DER/FJ), believes that the political return of former Senegalese president Macky Sall could be seen as a “declaration of aggression”, Seneweb reports. He made the remarks on Sunday 1 November 2026 on the programme “Grand Jury”, as figures from the former regime called on the former president to return to Senegal.

Abdoulaye Niane believes that this return would not bring down President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, while calling on Macky Sall to preserve the record of his presidency rather than return to a political confrontation. He also rejected the idea of a policy of reprisals against the former regime, saying he did not support a “witch hunt”, according to Seneweb.

Macky Sall’s return to Dakar had been discussed in connection with his candidacy for the post of United Nations secretary-general. A meeting with Bassirou Diomaye Faye was then scheduled at the presidential palace on 17 July 2026, the first between the two men since the handover of power in April 2024.

This warning comes amid a Senegalese debate marked by accusations that the authorities are being weakened. On the same day, Cheikh Oumar Diagne accused figures of weakening Faye and Sonko, while Amadou Athié left PASTEF and backed Faye’s political momentum.
