Guinea’s National Education Union is demanding six measures to improve teachers’ situation, including implementing special status and regularising careers. The organisation is also calling for regular payment of allowances and a precise implementation timetable on World Teachers’ Day.

The National Education Union (SNE), an organisation representing education workers in Guinea, is calling on the authorities to take six measures to improve working and pay conditions in state schools, reports Mosaiqueguinee. It presented its demands on World Teachers’ Day.

The union is calling for the adoption and implementation of the special status for education workers, the regularisation of administrative files and the regular payment of allowances. It is also demanding the settlement of salary arrears owed to teachers employed by local authorities, faster reclassification and increased public funding for education to limit the commercialisation of schooling.

SNE Secretary-General Michel Pépé Bal called for social dialogue based on the implementation of regulations and the payment of sums owed. These demands echo those of other Guinean unions: the Professional Education Trade Union Federation (FSPE) notably called for special status for education and put forward 11 measures for the sector. The SNE had also called for the payment of outstanding salaries and allowances.
