Women from Gambia's ruling party handed Adama Barrow 2.5 million dalasis to fund his candidacy in the 5 December presidential election, more than twice the required fee. The president hailed a historic contribution and renewed his promise to pay 50 million dalasis into the women's fund after the election.

Women from Gambia's National People's Party (NPP) and allied parties handed President Adama Barrow 2.5 million dalasis to fund his candidacy in the 5 December presidential election. The sum is 1.5 million dalasis more than the nomination fee, set at one million, Kerr Fatou reports.

At the ceremony at State House, Adama Barrow described the fundraising as historic and said no women's group had made a comparable financial contribution to a candidate since Gambia's independence. He invited activists to attend his investiture in large numbers, scheduled for 10 November.

NPP national women's leader Maimuna Baldeh said each participant had been asked to contribute 10 dalasis to enable as many people as possible to take part. The president also renewed his promise to add 50 million dalasis to the Women's Enterprise Fund after the election. He announced the allocation on 5 October as part of his commitment to women entrepreneurs in the party, as recalled by his promise of 50 million dalasis to NPP women.
