Gambian President Adama Barrow plans to turn the Bakoteh dumpsite into a commercial hub, with a large market and garage intended in particular to accommodate activities from Serrekunda Market and Sandika. The project will follow the dumpsite’s closure by an international waste-management company and could create 1,000 jobs, according to Kerr Fatou.
Gambian President Adama Barrow plans to transform the Bakoteh dumpsite into a commercial hub including a market and a garage described as the largest in Gambia and Africa. The project is intended in particular to accommodate Serrekunda Market and the Sandika commercial site, the head of state announced at a ceremony at State House.
The initiative is to begin after a contract is signed with an international waste-management company active in 29 countries. The company is to dismantle the dumpsite, while an architect will be tasked with designing the future facilities. The company also plans to create 1,000 jobs for Gambians, under the supervision of a Gambian managing director, according to Adama Barrow.
The president did not announce a timetable for dismantling the dumpsite, starting the work or completing the market and garage. Gambia had previously entrusted Zoomlion with projects to build waste-treatment plants.
