About 60 Algerian tankers have delivered a first consignment of fuel to Agadez, in northern Niger, under a joint escort by the armed forces of the two countries. The operation comes as Niger faces supply difficulties and is due to be officially received on 1 November, according to Aïr Info.

A first delivery of Algerian fuel arrived in Agadez, northern Niger, on Saturday evening in a convoy of about 60 tankers. The transport was escorted by the Nigerien and Algerian armed forces, according to Aïr Info.

The presence of Algerian military personnel seen in recent days in northern Niger is explained by this escort and security mission, according to Aïr Info. The fuel is due to be officially received in Agadez on Sunday, 1 November, in the presence of Niger’s Minister of Petroleum.

The delivery comes as Niger reviews its fuel reserves and supplies, a process announced on 5 October. It also follows Algeria’s announcement that it would send battalions to Niger on 27 October, and the arrival of a first Algerian military convoy on 31 October.
