The organisation also advises storing water before Divali, celebrated on 8 November, and is seeking new sources of supply, according to its statement.
The Central Water Authority (CWA), Mauritius’s water distribution body, is asking the public to reserve drinking water for essential needs and avoid waste. In a statement published on Saturday 31 October, it said that reservoir and groundwater reserves continued to decline sharply, according to the CWA.
The organisation advised residents to make arrangements to store water before the Divali festival, scheduled for 8 November, and said it was seeking new sources of supply to make up for the decline in reserves.
The appeal follows the reduction in withdrawals from Mare-aux-Vacoas, announced on 4 October, followed by water rationing introduced on 18 October. The island’s reservoirs stood at 53.2% on 22 October, according to previous CWA communications.
