Mauritius could be losing up to 65% of its water through pipes

Up to 65% of water is reportedly lost in Mauritius’s pipes, according to Reform Party member Vinesh Moheeputh, as the island faces a supply crisis. He is urging the government to invest in desalination and river water treatment, Defimedia reports.

Up to 65% of water is reportedly lost in Mauritius’s pipes as the island faces a supply crisis. Vinesh Moheeputh, a member of the Reform Party, is calling on the government to invest heavily to reduce these losses, whatever the cost, according to Defimedia.

Among the solutions put forward by Vinesh Moheeputh are desalinating seawater and treating river water. The call comes as Mauritius transfers 10,000 m³ of water to La Marie every day, according to the Mauritian authorities.

The situation comes amid declining reserves: the Mare-aux-Vacoas reservoir could fall to 20% by the end of November, according to a forecast reported on 21 October in Mare-aux-Vacoas. The daily transfer of 10,000 m³ of water to La Marie was announced on 23 October as part of the response to the shortage, as reported in Mauritius transfers 10,000 m³ of water daily to La Marie.
