The ruling APC is defending Bola Tinubu’s record in the power sector, while former vice-president Atiku Abubakar says Nigerians have seen no tangible results. Power cuts persist more than three years after Tinubu’s campaign promise, Punch reports, as criticism intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) says Bola Tinubu’s promise to ensure a stable electricity supply remains on track. Its presidential campaign council defended the president’s record against criticism from former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, according to Punch.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the council’s spokesperson and Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, urged Nigerians to take account of Tinubu’s commitment during the 2023 campaign: if he failed to fulfil his promise, he would have to provide satisfactory reasons before seeking a second term. The president had also promised to tackle estimated billing, which charges households and businesses amounts calculated rather than based on their actual consumption.
Power cuts persist in many parts of the country, more than three years after the campaign. Atiku, candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, as well as Peter Obi and Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State and candidate of the Allied People’s Movement, are criticising the handling of the electricity crisis ahead of the 2027 general election.
The APC’s defence follows Atiku’s criticism of Tinubu’s record in the power sector, published on 1 November in his accusations over electricity in Nigeria. The former vice-president has also announced plans to reform tariffs, according to another article published the same day on his proposed tariff reform.
