Atiku Abubakar accuses President Bola Tinubu of failing to fulfil his promise to improve electricity supply in Nigeria and says households and businesses still face power cuts and generator costs. The former vice-president promises, if elected, to replace the current category-based tariff system; he also sought clarification on the planned removal of electricity subsidies in 2027, according to Aminiya.
Former Nigerian vice-president Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu of failing to fulfil his promise to provide Nigerians with a stable electricity supply. He said millions of people continue to endure power cuts and finance their electricity supply with generators and fuel, according to a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, director of communications for his presidential campaign team within the ADC.
Atiku Abubakar also criticised the system dividing electricity tariffs into categories A, B, C, D and E, saying users pay high amounts despite inadequate supply. He called on the government to explain how the planned removal of electricity subsidies in 2027 would affect household and business bills, Aminiya reports.
The former vice-president promised that, if elected, he would replace the system with a simpler tariff structure, in coordination with state governments and electricity authorities. He also wants electricity companies to be held accountable for the quality of the service they provide and opposes any new tax burden on energy, while consumers already face high costs.
