Nigeria’s Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu says the South-East supports the re-election of Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima in 2027. He was speaking in Enugu at a mobilisation campaign for women of the All Progressives Congress, reports This Day.

Nigerian lawmaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu said on Saturday 31 October 2026 that the South-East would support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima in 2027. The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives was speaking in Enugu at the launch of an APC women’s mobilisation campaign and an empowerment programme led by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, according to ThisDay.

Benjamin Kalu, who heads the APC presidential campaign council for southern Nigeria, said that people in the South-East should support the president, whom he accused of defending their interests. He cited in particular Tinubu’s appointment of Igbo officials when he was governor of Lagos from 1999 to 2007, as well as the enactment of the law establishing the South-East Development Commission.

The lawmaker also said that promises of reconstruction, rehabilitation and reintegration made to Igbo people after the civil war had not been kept by previous governments. His statement comes as governors in Nigeria’s South-East call for Tinubu’s re-election, ahead of the 2027 election.
