Gambian presidential candidate Talib Ahmed Bensouda promises to suspend foreign trawler licences and finance local fishermen if elected. At a rally in Brufut, he also announced investment in fishing infrastructure to support employment and food security, according to Kerr Fatou.
Talib Ahmed Bensouda, mayor of the Kanifing municipality and Coalition 2026 candidate in Gambia’s presidential election, has promised to suspend licences granted to foreign trawlers if elected on 5 December. He said he wanted to give Gambian fishermen more space and finance the development of their businesses, according to Gambian media outlet Kerr Fatou.
At a rally in Brufut, he accused President Adama Barrow’s government of allowing foreign vessels to operate in areas traditionally used by local fishermen. Bensouda also promised to improve fish landing facilities in Brufut to support employment and food security.
These commitments complement the social reforms promised by Bensouda and his governance and security proposals announced on 28 October.
