Nigerian Works Minister David Umahi has called on people in the South-East to support Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 and disputed Peter Obi’s standing as a credible candidate for the region. Nigerian Public Works Minister David Umahi has called on people in south-east Nigeria to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. At an APC public meeting in Abakaliki, he said the region had no credible candidate and challenged the potential candidacy of Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, P.M. News reported.
Umahi named former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, former Education Minister Sam Egwu and Elias Mbam, former chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation and Allocation Commission, as regional leaders he considers as qualified as Obi. He called on traditional and religious leaders, including the Christian Association of Nigeria, to take a stand in support of Tinubu. According to him, another term would strengthen south-east Nigeria’s political influence as it pursues its future ambition of electing a president from the region.
The minister said south-east Nigeria had benefited under Tinubu from appointments to important positions and the rehabilitation of major roads. He pledged to secure 1.3 million votes for Tinubu and Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru in 2027, when the state has 1.8 million registered voters, according to his count. He also promised to prevent another party from winning the next Ebonyi governorship election.
The call follows an appeal by governors in south-east Nigeria for another term for Tinubu. The south-east Nigerian governors had also called for his re-election.
