Drones kill hundreds of civilians and hit 13 power stations in Sudan

Antonio Guterres condemns the rise in drone attacks in Sudan, which have killed hundreds of civilians and damaged more than 13 electricity distribution stations. The UN secretary-general calls on the parties to the conflict to protect civilians and essential infrastructure, and to agree without delay to a cessation of hostilities, according to his spokesperson.

Drone attacks carried out by the parties to the conflict in Sudan have killed hundreds of civilians, including women and children, and damaged more than 13 electricity distribution stations in several Sudanese states and in Abyei, according to a statement by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cited by Sudan Tribune. The strikes caused power cuts in several cities.

The affected facilities are located notably in Gedaref, Khartoum, Al-Jazira, Red Sea, Sennar, White Nile and South Kordofan states. Antonio Guterres condemned attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, particularly healthcare facilities, and called on the parties to swiftly agree to a cessation of hostilities, according to his spokesperson.

This new wave of strikes comes after attacks that had already killed at least 306 people in three weeks, followed by reported damage to the Sudanese power grid on 28 October. The UN secretary-general also renewed his call for the parties to participate in good faith in mediation efforts.
