According to Mostafa Abdelkebir, president of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, their continued detention is intended to pressure Tunis after a Libyan national was arrested in Tunisia.
Several Tunisian nationals held in the Zelten region of Libya have been released, but two young men are reportedly still being detained, Mostafa Abdelkebir, president of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights (OTDH), announced on Sunday 1 November 2026. He said their continued detention was intended to pressure the Tunisian authorities into securing the release of a Libyan national arrested in Tunisia.
Mostafa Abdelkebir said the two Tunisians had no connection to the case that led to the arrest. The previous day, he had said that the group was being held at a security checkpoint, with their passports confiscated and their vehicles immobilised.
The OTDH president called on the Libyan authorities, security officials and local representatives from the Zouara region, as well as influential local figures who could intervene, to secure the immediate release of the two men and the return of their property.
