Eight camel-racing events were held on Sunday at the Cheikh Zayed ben Sultan Al Nahyan Camel Racetrack in Tan-Tan province, as part of the 19th edition of the Tan-Tan Moussem, according to the General Federation of Camel Racing in Morocco. A ceremony then awarded prizes to the winners and owners of the highest-placed camels.
One race was held with a jockey, while the other seven used robotic jockeys, said Ennajem Waaban, the federation’s first vice-president and spokesperson, in a statement to MAP. The official said there had been strong participation by breeders from several provinces and described the competition as support for camel breeders.
The racetrack, inaugurated in 2017, stretches for nearly four kilometres and has facilities that meet international standards. The Moussem also includes the “Al-Mouzayana” beauty contests and “Al-Mahaleb” milk-production contests, intended to preserve the traditions of nomadic livestock farming, according to Ennajem Waaban and breeder Essahel El Baz.
