The death toll from a pirogue carrying irregular migrants has risen from 21 to 34, according to the health ministry of the Houthi rebels, who blame the Saudi-led coalition and say the toll is still preliminary, according to international media.
The death toll from the capsizing of a pirogue carrying irregular migrants rose from 21 to 34 on Sunday in the Kébémer department, according to Le Soleil. One survivor has been recorded. The pirogue had left Saint-Louis for the Spanish coast three days before it capsized, following a heavy swell and material damage.
The discovery of more bodies prompted a fresh mobilisation by the authorities. The governor of Louga, Ndèye Ngenar Mbodj, went on Sunday to meet the bereaved families to convey the state's condolences and supervise the emergency operations. The Minister of the Interior and Public Security, El Hadji Makhtar Cissé, is expected on Monday 9 November in Lompoul to assess the situation and bring the state's support to the affected families.
