Kogi State has spent more than 7 billion nairas to renovate 88 primary health centres, before announcing that 80 of them had been inaugurated, Premium Times reports. Some of these facilities nonetheless remain unfinished and understaffed.
The government of the state, in central Nigeria, has not provided details on how the funds were allocated or on the actual state of the works. Field visits carried out by Premium Times showed repainted buildings fitted with roofs, doors and windows, but where no clinical services were yet being provided, as at the Ojoku primary health centre, in OAU local government area.
In Nigeria, primary health centres are the first point of contact between the population and the health system, particularly in rural areas. Their operation depends largely on the budgets of the federal states.
