Trump orders probe into Democratic impeachment threats

Donald Trump has ordered the US Justice Department to examine Democratic impeachment threats against members of his administration. Democrats, now in control of the House and Senate, are preparing investigations into Trump and several officials, according to Vanguard.

Donald Trump said on Saturday that he had ordered the US Justice Department to examine impeachment threats against members of his administration. The US president accused Democrats of engaging in “extortion” and said no act that could justify impeachment had been committed, in a message published on his Truth Social network.

Democrats, who now control the House of Representatives and the Senate following Tuesday’s midterm elections, have committee chairmanships to summon officials, demand documents and hold public hearings. The investigations could notably focus on the Trump family’s business and cryptocurrency activities, government contracts involving Elon Musk, staff cuts at federal agencies, immigration and the conduct of the war against Iran.

A third impeachment proceeding against Donald Trump remains possible, but Democratic leaders have not committed to launching one. The House of Representatives can vote to impeach by a simple majority, while impeachment requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate, a difficult threshold to reach with the current numbers, according to Vanguard.
