Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller, architect of his restrictive immigration policy, as White House chief of staff after Republicans lost the midterm elections. Miller will replace Susie Wiles, who will join the president's political organisation and oversee its political operations, according to Le Monde. He will take office on 9 November.

Stephen Miller, a longtime adviser to Donald Trump and deputy chief of staff, will replace Susie Wiles as head of the presidential team from Monday 9 November. Trump announced the reshuffle on 6 November on Truth Social, three days after Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives and Senate. He described Miller as one of his close associates and praised Wiles's work.

Wiles submitted her resignation on Thursday evening, according to a US official cited by CBS News, and will join the “Trump Political Operation”. She said her time in the administration had been “the honour of a lifetime” and assured that her commitment to the president and his mission would remain unchanged. Aged 69, she took office in January 2025 after managing Trump's successful 2024 campaign and became the first woman to hold the position at the White House.

Aged 41, Miller was previously deputy chief of staff for policy and a homeland security adviser. He has worked with Trump since the 2016 presidential campaign and helped shape his restrictive immigration policy. He also served as a senior adviser and deputy chief of staff during Trump's first presidential term.

Wiles's departure comes amid a series of changes within the administration following the midterm elections. Several Justice Department officials have also left their posts, including John Eisenberg and Jason Reding Quiñones. Democrats criticised Miller's appointment, while Trump's communications director, Steven Cheung, defended the choice, describing him as one of the leading advocates of the president's agenda.
