Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, believes Donald Trump deserved his defeat in the US midterm elections. She criticised his handling of the war in Iran, tariffs and relations with allies, saying this policy was contrary to conservative principles, in an interview with The Independent.

Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, said Donald Trump, president of the United States, deserved his defeat in the midterm elections, describing the setback as “entirely self-inflicted”, according to an interview with The Independent. She particularly criticised his handling of the war with Iran, his trade policy and his attitude towards several allies.

Badenoch criticised Trump over his tariffs, threats against Canada and Greenland and disputes with allies, saying these choices moved away from conservative principles favouring free trade. She also criticised his personal attacks on journalists and political figures, as well as his treatment of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

On Iran, Kemi Badenoch said she understood Trump’s initial decision to use force to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, but questioned the absence of a clearly defined strategy. She also said she would have been pleased if Trump had lost the 2024 presidential election to Kamala Harris.

These criticisms come after Trump blames Iran war for Republican defeat on 4 November, and after Donald Trump attributed his party’s defeat to the war with Iran. On 5 November, Trump’s defeat reshuffles US foreign policy.
