The Nigerian Army announced the full restoration of its official X account, after an attempted unauthorised access detected on 29 August. The account is again managed exclusively by the army, which had earlier asked the public to ignore suspicious content posted during the recovery.
The Nigerian Army announced on Sunday 8 November that it had fully recovered its official account on the social network X, @HQNigerianArmy, after a hacking attempt detected on 29 August, reports Punch.
The unauthorised access had been detected at around 5pm on 29 August. Colonel Appolonia Anele, acting director of public relations of the Nigerian Army, had then said the incident was being treated as a cybersecurity breach. Technical and protective measures had been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access, according to Punch.
During the period of restricted control, the army had asked the public and the media to ignore suspicious or unverified content published on the account and to consult its other verified platforms, notably Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. The account of the Nigerian Defence Headquarters, @DHQNigeria, had also been hacked earlier in August before being recovered within a few days, reports Punch.
