His work is based on five determinants, including nutrition, lifestyle and the environment, according to Seneweb.
Professor Sylla Thiam, a doctor, researcher and public health expert, proposes incorporating cultural and religious realities into disease prevention strategies. In his book “Acting on the determinants of health”, he links scientific knowledge with the teachings of the Quran and the Sunna, according to Seneweb.
His approach is based on five determinants of health: genetics and biology, nutrition, lifestyle, the environment and the health system. Sylla Thiam believes health strategies are less likely to achieve their effects when they do not take account of the cultural and religious beliefs of populations, according to his statements reported by Seneweb.
The book draws in particular on 206 modern scientific references, 32 references devoted to the cited Quranic verses and 49 hadith references from recognised collections. Professor Lamine Guèye, a neurologist, considers this approach a contribution to adapting health strategies to cultural and religious realities, according to Seneweb.
