Senegal coach Patrick Vieira defended the team’s rejuvenation and asked sidelined players to regain their places through their club performances, at a press conference on Thursday, according to Seneweb.

Vieira clarified that the absence of Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Guèye was a tactical choice limited to the current squad gathering. He also expressed disappointment after Ismail Jakobs retired from international football, while saying he respected the Senegalese defender’s decision.

Ahead of the two-match qualifying tie against Sudan for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, the coach stressed work on set pieces and discussed cautiously opening up to players from the domestic league. He also gave an update on the condition of the pitch at the Léopold Sédar Senghor stadium, according to Seneweb.

The press conference came after the announcement of the squad featuring three new players with Senegal and the absence of Sadio Mané from the squad gathering, both published on 5 November.
