US magazine Condé Nast Traveler published a report on 3 November about the tourism potential of the Algerian Sahara after a nine-day trip between Algiers and Djanet. Journalist Heather Richardson describes the landscapes, rock-art heritage and opportunities to develop tourism in the Tassili n’Ajjer, according to Algérie Eco.
The trip was organised with Explore Worldwide, a British tour operator that has offered tours in Algeria since early 2026. Djanet, in the south-east of the country near the borders with Libya and Niger, serves as the starting point for several routes in the Sahara. Guides must communicate their itineraries to the military authorities, according to the report.
Algeria aims to quadruple the number of visitors by 2030 to diversify its revenues beyond hydrocarbons. Travellers spending most of their stay in the Sahara can obtain a visa on arrival; nearly 39,000 people have benefited from this arrangement since its introduction in 2023, according to Condé Nast Traveler. The report follows GEO’s presentation of ten ideas for visiting Algeria on 1 October.
