Burkina Faso says it was not informed of expulsions from Guinea

Burkina Faso’s Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, says Burkina Faso’s authorities were not informed in advance of the expulsion of Burkinabè gold miners from Guinea. During a visit to Bamako on 4 November, he asked Mali for help organising their return, according to Sidwaya.

Burkina Faso says it was not informed of the expulsion of its nationals from Guinea and has sent a delegation to Bamako to organise their return, reports Sidwaya. Led by Burkina Faso’s Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, the delegation met Malian authorities on Wednesday 4 November 2026 to assess the situation of Burkinabè gold miners who had been turned back and coordinate their care.

Around 100 buses were mobilised for the repatriation, 50 of which were already in Malian territory. Burkina Faso has also identified reception sites and plans to resettle the nationals with their families, while Mali and the Burkina Faso embassy in Bamako provided humanitarian assistance.

The mission comes after the organisation of the return of thousands of nationals expelled from Guinea, announced on 4 November 2026. It follows the arrival of Burkinabè people travelling through Bamako, reported on 5 November in an article about nationals leaving Guinea.
