Mauritanian authorities are asking herders and nomads near the Moroccan border to return to the national territory and move away from border areas. Governors of several districts, including Dakhlet Nouadhibou, relayed the instructions as MINURSO prepares to withdraw, according to Al-Akhbar.
Mauritania is asking its citizens living near the border with Morocco to return to Mauritanian territory without delay and move away from high-risk border areas. The governors of several districts, notably Dakhlet Nouadhibou, have issued these instructions to herders and nomads, according to the Mauritanian news agency Al-Akhbar, cited by Yabiladi.
The authorities are also urging the residents concerned to exercise caution and vigilance as MINURSO, the UN mission in the Sahara, prepares to leave the region. They cited the need to avoid areas that could compromise the safety of local populations, according to Yabiladi.
The request comes after the UN’s decision to end MINURSO’s mandate in the Sahara, announced on 2 November. It also follows the announcement that 340 members of the mission would be withdrawn on the same day, as part of the end of MINURSO’s mandate and the withdrawal of 340 MINURSO members.
