Mauritania has signed two exploration-production contracts with Murphy Oil Corporation for the C10 and Tiof offshore blocks in its coastal basin. The agreement, formalised in Nouakchott by Minister Mohamed Abdel Vetah, strengthens the opening of Mauritania’s hydrocarbons sector to US investors, according to Initiatives News.
The Mauritanian government signed two exploration-production contracts with Murphy Oil Corporation in Nouakchott on Tuesday 3 November for the C10 and Tiof offshore blocks in the Mauritanian coastal basin. The agreement was signed on behalf of Mauritania by Mohamed Abdel Vetah, minister of energy and petroleum, and by Olson Christopher Charles, Murphy Oil’s senior vice-president responsible for exploration and the subsurface, according to Initiatives News.
Mauritanian authorities believe that the geological data available on these two areas, combined with Murphy Oil’s experience in exploring similar sedimentary basins, could improve knowledge of the country’s oil and gas resources. The signing comes as Mauritania is developing the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project with Senegal, according to Initiatives News.
Minister Mohamed Abdel Vetah presented the agreement as a step in President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani’s strategy to make the energy sector a driver of economic growth and industrial development. The ceremony was attended by Corina Sanders, chargé d’affaires at the US embassy in Mauritania, Initiatives News reports.
